Value Stream Mapping

Map material and information flow to expose value-added time, waiting, inventory and bottlenecks.

When it helps

Map material and information flow to expose value-added time, waiting, inventory and bottlenecks.

Data and preparation

Process steps, cycle/process time, waiting, WIP/inventory, transfers, demand and information flow

Practical workflow

  1. Define the product/service family and flow boundary.
  2. Observe the current flow at gemba and collect times/inventory.
  3. Draw current state and identify dominant losses.
  4. Design a future state with explicit flow and pull rules.
  5. Turn the current→future gap into a measurable action plan.

Connection to AIAG

This is a supporting Continuous Improvement method, not an AIAG Core Tool. In QAPP, findings can feed a CQI-20/8D problem-solving workflow and, when the process risk/control changes, trigger review of PFMEA, Control Plan, MSA/SPC or other applicable Core Tool records.

Interpretation limits

Do not use the tool as a ritual. Define a measurable problem, baseline and decision rule, then verify whether the change improved the process without creating another risk.
