When it helps

Level volume and mix to reduce scheduling-induced variation and stabilise flow.

Data and preparation

Demand, mix, capacity, pitch, constraints and planning horizon

Practical workflow

  1. Separate real demand from internally created fluctuation.
  2. Calculate realistic capacity and pace.
  3. Define the levelling pattern and frozen window.
  4. Test the impact on WIP and changeovers.
  5. Review rules when demand/capacity change.

Connection to AIAG

This is a supporting Continuous Improvement method, not an AIAG Core Tool. In QAPP, findings can feed a CQI-20/8D problem-solving workflow and, when the process risk/control changes, trigger review of PFMEA, Control Plan, MSA/SPC or other applicable Core Tool records.

Interpretation limits

Do not use the tool as a ritual. Define a measurable problem, baseline and decision rule, then verify whether the change improved the process without creating another risk.
